The European Commission said Friday it was reviewing Italy's reasons for extending temporary border controls with Spain amid continued concerns over the situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

"Regarding the reasons of the prolongation, what I can say is that we are looking into this and we are in contact with the member states," European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier told reporters in Brussels.
梅西耶称，欧盟内政事务专员马格努斯·布伦纳与西班牙和意大利当局（包括两国内政部长）保持着密切且定期的联系。
Mercier said Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner remained in close and regular contact with Spanish and Italian authorities, including their interior ministers.

"Member states can introduce border controls at the internal borders under certain conditions," Mercier said. Italy extended its temporary border controls with Spain for another 15 days on Wednesday.

The Italian Interior Ministry said the decision was prompted by the situation in Ceuta and the persistence of concerns that had previously led authorities to introduce the controls.

Around 72,000 people irregularly crossed from Morocco into Ceuta on July 30-31, according to Spanish government estimates.
