President Trump participated in a video-call meeting with leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) countries and the International Energy Agency (IEA) on Friday, but his camera was off while other leaders Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA, said in a post on the social platform X that leaders met to discuss the global energy market and “severe pressures” on diesel supply. Birol attached a photo of the virtual meeting that showed leaders of Canada, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the European Commission, France and Japan on camera while Trump was not. It is not clear if the president’s camera was off for the entire meeting or just at the moment the picture was taken.
Birol attached a statement from the G7 leaders in which they acknowledged the volatility in oil markets and “surging prices threatening economic stability.”Diesel costs are up by more than $2 compared with a year ago, while gasoline is up by more than a dollar. The statement said the G7 member countries, which include the U.S., would be releasing 100 million barrels of oil over the next four months with a substantial diesel release in the first 20 days. The statement condemned Iran for disrupting international trade and energy security and applauded the U.S.
“We have agreed on decisive, coordinated measures to stabilize immediate energy supplies, shield households and businesses from price shocks, and strengthen the long-term resilience of global energy systems,” the statement read. “We commend the United States for its efforts to ensure the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz,” it added.
Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Friday morning that Europe had agreed to immediately release a “massive amount” of their diesel stockpile. Trump has repeatedly downplayed the concerns over rising oil and gas costs and said last month that the price bump is a “very inexpensive price to pay” for what has occurred in the Iran war.
