By Jacob Reid The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute a 28-year-old man for preparing acts of terrorism, including against Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, according to a statement.

Joshua Kerry, from Rotherham in Yorkshire, was already charged with the murder of Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe in July, after she was found dead in her south west England home.

In April last year, a “lit incendiary device” was pushed through the letterbox of Farage’s Greater London home, but no arrests were made and the investigation was closed. In August, Counter Terrorism Policing said officers had re-opened the investigation after it “identified a line of enquiry which was not identified and pursued by them at the time, which may have been relevant.”

Farage said the incident at his home and Widdecombe’s murder were “directly linked” and that Counter Terrorism Policing had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because “clearly, counter-terrorism made some mistakes.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the charges as “extremely concerning” and said “an attack on anyone in politics is an attack on us all.”“This case raises serious questions about the security of those in public life,” Mahmood added in a post on X. She said the case should be “an opportunity to reset” and that she will update Parliament on work to strengthen protections for politicians.

Reform’s deputy leader Richard Tice described the news as “terrifying” in a post on X. “This is why he needs money for security,” Tice added, referring to Farage.

Farage’s security arrangements became a political issue after it emerged that he failed to declare a £5 million ($6.8 million) gift. He said he didn’t have to declare that amount as it was a private gift to cover his personal security. The issue is being investigated by the parliamentary standards commissioner.

Kerry will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Oct. 7.
