Bolivian Vice President Edmand Lara said on Friday that his life is in danger, and warned authorities could arrest him on false charges, amid a government crackdown targeting officials accused of corruption and links to drug trafficking.
Lara said in a statement that he received warnings of an alleged plan to arrest him and fabricate evidence against him. He said he feared for his safety and that of his family.
He urged the legislature, prosecutors, human rights organizations and the international community to monitor his situation and urged authorities to respect due process.
His warning came after authorities arrested Attorney General Roger Mariaca and 13 others in an operation targeting a criminal network operating within the judiciary and Public Prosecutor's Office.
Interior Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo accused Mariaca of protecting drug traffickers, and said the operation was supported by US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) information. Mariaca denied the allegations. Lara called for due process in Mariaca's case before issuing his warning.
Washington revoked Mariaca's visa earlier this week, accusing him of taking bribes to facilitate drug trafficking and help criminals evade justice. Mariaca rejected the allegations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has praised the arrests as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking, corruption and organized crime.
The arrests are part of a broader government investigation into alleged criminal networks operating within state institutions. The government has not publicly linked Lara to the investigation. Authorities have not publicly announced charges against Lara or confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued.
