Japanese internet services firm GMO Research & AI Inc. said data belonging to as many as 948,500 members was stolen following unauthorized access to its server, local media reported Tuesday.

The compromised information included names, email and home addresses, phone numbers and encrypted passwords, Kyodo News reported.

The company said members’ reward points worth around 2.9 million yen ($18,000) were also fraudulently exchanged for Amazon gift card codes. Members earn points by completing surveys on the company's infoQ website. The attack began Friday after hackers exploited a vulnerability in software used by the site. GMO blocked the unauthorized access and suspended the service after detecting the breach Saturday.

Mr Max detected the breach Saturday and immediately suspended the affected services. The retailer said it had found no evidence of misuse but urged customers to remain alert for phishing emails. The incidents come amid a string of major data breaches in Japan.
