U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle speaks during U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit on Oct. 7, 2026, at the prime minister's office in Athens, Greece.

Donald Trump didn’t need another round of foreign policy problems, but it’s clear the president’s ambassadors are creating difficult complications for his administration. One ambassador in particular, however, stands out — and not in a good way.

The Wall Street Journal reported a couple of weeks ago on Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News contributor who is also Donald Trump Jr.’s former fiancée, and her controversial tenure as the U.S. ambassador to Greece. Among the more problematic aspects of her work has been Guilfoyle’s involvement of lobbyist Christos Marafatsos in so many official meetings “that some foreign officials mistook him for her chief of staff.”

The same report added that the U.S. ambassador has promoted Marafatsos’ employer, Greek construction firm Aktor Group, for energy deals, to the puzzlement of officials in the region and to the concern of key congressional Democrats This week, however, new allegations made her situation vastly more serious.

Kimberly Guilfoyle was preparing for her congressional hearing to become U.S. ambassador to Greece when she reached out to a Trump donor with an urgent request: She needed $100,000 that she said she owed American Express — in a way that wouldn’t leave a paper trail.

“It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” she wrote on Signal, according to messages reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. “Please.”According to the reporting, which has not been independently verified by MS NOW, Guilfoyle had been in communication with Eric Deters, a failed former Republican congressional candidate, who was hoping for the Trump administration’s assistance on some personal tax and legal issues.

He was reportedly prepared to pay Guilfoyle as much as $1 million if she helped use her influence within Team Trump to make her troubles go away, and she assured him that she could deliver.

“Every secretary of you know defense, transportation, treasury commerce IRS commissioner everyone gets right back to me,” she wrote in a message to Deters, adding, “Oh yeah, l’m forgetting cash Patel,” in an apparent misspelling of FBI Director Kash Patel’s name.

But in early July, the then-nominee apparently wanted an advance.

“Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” she texted Deters, adding a prayer hands emoji and a PDF with bill payment instructions from American Express. “You could just send it here,” she wrote on July 3, 2025, just days before her July 9 confirmation hearing.

Deters ultimately declined the request, although the Journal’s report went on to note that Guilfoyle also expressed concern about their communications potentially reaching the public.

In one especially memorable exchange, Guilfoyle warned him not to reference money or payments by way of texts: “Eric, I really wish you would stop papering all these things.”

In context, “papering” apparently meant “putting controversial comments in writing.”In another exchange, Deters suggested he was not altogether impressed with the return on his investment.

“I have paid you $300,000 over the years,” he wrote to Guilfoyle. “As of this memo, I have not received one favor. I am not naive or a sucker. I need results.”

A lawyer for Guilfoyle said the ambassador disputed the authenticity of the messages obtained by the newspaper, but he declined to provide specifics. Deters told the Journal, “She never came through on anything.”In a normal political environment, this would be about the time the ambassador might decide to update her resume and schedule a one-way flight out of Athens.

Asked about the revelations, Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska told MS NOW, “If true, it is bad.”Another House GOP member, who requested anonymity to speak candidly, added, “This is the type of crap that will cost us the majority.”Q: Do you have any reaction to a US ambassador asking someone to pay off debt in exchange for access to other government officials?VANCE: Well, so — with that hypothetical, obviously I don't love that, but I, you know, I don't know exactly who you're talking about, I don't know the full details Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) JD Vance was also asked about the reporting at an unrelated press conference on Thursday morning.

Aaron Rupar(@atrupar.com)在周四上午的另一场新闻发布会上也被问及此事。

“Well, so, with that hypothetical, obviously I don’t love that, but I, you know, I don’t know exactly who you’re talking about, I don’t know the full details,” the vice president replied.

With 26 days remaining in the midterm election cycle and Democrats already focusing heavily on corruption allegations surrounding the Republican administration, Guilfoyle’s controversy couldn’t have come at a worse time for Team Trump or the GOP.

UPDATE (October 8, 2026, 11:52 a.m. ET): During an on-air appearance with MS NOW’s Peter Alexander on Thursday morning, Deters said, “I cannot stand Kimberly Guilfoyle. Kimberly Guilfoyle is a wicked evil person. She thought I was going to be a sucker, and I’m not a sucker.”

In the same interview, Deters added that his previous arrangement with Guilfoyle was “absolutely … a quid pro quo.”
