The vote to elect 24 politicians to represent the people of the Isle of Man has taken place. Two members have been chosen in each of the island's 12 constituencies to serve a term in the House of Keys lasting until 2031.

From those 24 MHKs a new government will be formed, including a chief minister to lead the administration for the next five years. Here is how that will unfold: On Tuesday morning at 11:30 BST all 24 of those elected will be formally sworn in as members of the Manx parliament. The ceremony takes place in the House of Keys and is conducted by the first and second deemsters.

Each new member has the choice of taking an official oath of allegiance or making a solemn affirmation - this can be done in either English or Manx Gaelic.

This process is crucial as elected representatives cannot take their seats in the chamber, or take part in any parliamentary debate or votes, until officially sworn in.

Later the same day, at 14:30, the newly sworn-in MHKs will return to the chamber to take part in a sitting of the House of Keys to elect a presiding officer.

To do this the longest serving eligible member is appointed to preside over the proceedings. To qualify to do this, the MHK cannot be a minister from the previous administration or themselves a candidate for the role. Candidates must then be proposed and seconded and if there is only one name put forward that member is elected to the post. If there is more than one candidates, a ballot takes place with the member receiving a majority of votes declared successful. The newly-elected Speaker then presides over the election of the Deputy Speaker, which follows the same process. To put themselves forward for the top job in Manx politics, MHKs must take part in a series of procedures.

Firstly, their policy proposals must be submitted to the clerk of Tynwald's Office, which will publish them on 6 October.

That will be followed by a hustings for those putting themselves forward, which sees them answer questions from their fellow MHKs.

The following Tuesday, 13 October, a sitting of the Keys takes place at 10:00 to allow the chief minister candidates to make an opening address and face questions tabled by members.

A ballot is then held to identify a preferred nominee, who must secure at least 13 votes. A second vote is then held to confirm the appointment. If no candidates attract the required votes, the Speaker can call for fresh nominations. Once selected by the MHKs, the nominee is formally appointed by the lieutenant governor.

The chief minister then chooses his Council of Ministers to head up the eight departments that make up the Manx government, with departmental members for each appointed thereafter.

Chairpersons and members of statutory boards, such as the Office of Fair Trading, Manx Utilities and the Isle of Man Post Office, are also selected.

MHKs will gather along with members of the Legislative Council for the first sitting of the Tynwald Court of the new parliamentary year on Tuesday, 20 October, at 10:00.

And finally, at the following month's sitting, on 17 November, the election of members to serve on parliamentary committees takes place.
