India's southern state of Tamil Nadu on Monday launched a scheme providing gold rings to newborn babies in government hospitals, a move aimed at boosting public confidence in state-run healthcare services.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the scheme, under which eligible newborns will receive a one-gram gold ring, according to a statement by the state's Information Department.

The scheme was a key election promise of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, which came to power in the state earlier this year.

The state government has already procured about 128,000 rings for the initial rollout. Babies born in government hospitals on or after June 22, 2026, are eligible under the scheme.
