A couple was detained in Latvia on suspicion of illegally gathering information about NATO and the country's defense sector for Russian military intelligence, the Baltic country's security authority said Thursday.

Latvia's State Security Service (VDD), in cooperation with the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD), detained the couple in June, broadcaster LSM reported, citing the VDD.

The two Latvian citizens are suspected of illegally gathering information about Latvia's defense sector on behalf of Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU, according to the report.
VDD称，调查人员于6月27日依据一项有关向外国情报机构收集和转移机密及其他信息的法律启动了刑事诉讼。
Criminal proceedings were initiated on June 27 under a law concerning the collection and transfer of classified and other information to a foreign intelligence service, the VDD said.

It said the investigation established that the suspects obtained and passed information to the GRU concerning Latvia's defense system, the activities of NATO-allied forces and various forms of support for Ukraine.

According to the security service, the suspects also obtained intelligence on the National Armed Forces' air base, radar systems and the movements of military air transport.

One of the suspects, acting on behalf of the GRU, carried out aerial reconnaissance and photographed the Adazi military base using a small private aircraft, the VDD said.

During searches of the couple's premises, authorities seized a large quantity of various types of data storage devices, as well as documents and notes, according to the report. The suspects have been remanded in custody as a precautionary measure, the VDD said.
