Finnish police are investigating suspected intrusions at the homes of several lawmakers, the country’s parliament speaker said Thursday.
The Helsinki Police Department launched a preliminary investigation into the suspected intrusions with support from the National Bureau of Investigation.
Speaker Jussi Halla-aho said the number of suspected cases was “significant,” while fewer than 20 lawmakers are believed to have been targeted, according to information obtained by public broadcaster Yle.
No signs of forced entry have been found, and nothing appears to have been stolen or damaged, according to Yle.
Instead, lawmakers reported unusual signs, including doors left open or lights switched on despite not remembering leaving them that way. Halla-aho said it was possible the signs had been deliberately left to indicate that someone had entered the properties.
The suspected incidents are believed to have occurred over the course of a year. Police have not identified a suspect or motive.
“From the point of view of the investigation, it would not be sensible to specify what they are,” Halla-aho said, referring to recurring signs identified in some of the suspected intrusions.
First Deputy Speaker Paula Risikko became aware of the first suspected intrusion on Sept. 23 and informed parliament's director of security Aaro Toivonen the following day.
Parliament subsequently asked parliamentary groups to determine whether other lawmakers had experienced similar incidents.
Lawmakers were also advised to monitor their homes for possible signs of intrusion and report them to parliament's security unit and police.
