The European Commission said Thursday it was referring Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration to the European Union’s top court for failures to comply with EU waste management rules.

The Commission noted that Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration have failed to correctly apply the Landfill Directive and the Waste Framework Directive.
《垃圾填埋指令》设定了垃圾填埋场标准，以防止对人类健康、水、土壤和空气造成不利影响，要求成员国采取措施确保只有经过处理的废物才能被填埋。
The Landfill Directive, which sets standards for landfills to prevent adverse effects on human health, water, soil and air, requires member states to take measures to ensure that only waste that has been subject to treatment is landfilled.
欧盟委员会表示，该指令旨在防止或减少废物产生，欧盟成员国必须以不危害人类健康和环境的方式回收和处置废物。
It aims to prevent or reduce the generation of waste, and EU members must recover and dispose of waste in a manner that does not endanger human health and the environment, said the European Commission.
此前，委员会于2021年11月向希腊、2024年12月向希腊塞浦路斯行政当局发出了正式通知函。
It came after the Commission sent letters of formal notice to Greece in November 2021 and to the Greek Cypriot Administration in December 2024.

The Commission said it considers efforts by the Greek government and the Greek Cypriot administration to address the shortcomings "have been insufficient" and is therefore referring the two to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
