After a reported six years in hiding, a notorious alleged drug kingpin nicknamed “The Kid” has been captured in Colombia. Arash Ebrahimi Far, known under the aliases “Ash” and “The Kid”, was detained by Colombian authorities on Wednesday in the Copacabana region after reportedly checking into hospital for gunshot related wounds days prior.

“The captured individual is considered a high-value target by Australian judicial authorities and was subject to an INTERPOL Red Notice for drug trafficking and money laundering offences,” a statement read. “According to the international file, alias ‘Ash’, allegedly held a leadership role within a transnational criminal organisation with the capacity to co-ordinate the trafficking of large quantities of narcotics, as well as the management of significant economic resources derived from illicit activities and access to illegal weapons. “The investigations also established that the criminal organisation used encrypted communication platforms to co-ordinate its activities and evade the controls of security and intelligence agencies.” Colombian police said Ebrahimi Far was being treated for gunshot wounds at the time of his capture. “According to information gathered during the investigation, the foreign national was receiving medical attention after being wounded by a gunshot wound days earlier, under circumstances that are currently being verified by the competent authorities,” their statement read. They claimed the Australian-Iranian citizen had been hiding in Colombia since December 2018. “According to authorities, he allegedly continued to co-ordinate and direct criminal operations with international reach from within the country,” Colombian police said. Ebrahimi Far remains in Colombian custody, awaiting potential extradition to Australia. “Our homeland is not a refuge or hiding place for those who try to do as they please while staying out of the law,” a spokesperson for the Colombian National Ministry of Defence said in a message on social media. WA police have been investigating Ebrahimi Far for years, claiming “The Kid” brought a large-scale drug syndicate to WA shores, shipping in large quantities of drugs. “Finding him is not the hard part, it’s bringing him back,” WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch told media in 2022. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted for comment.
