KUALA LUMPUR -- Nearly three-quarters of U.S. and local electronics companies operating in Malaysia plan to increase investment in the country, a survey released Friday showed, reflecting the country's growing presence as a technology investment destination.
The "Economic Impact Survey" compiled by the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AmCham Malaysia) found that 18% of electrical and electronics (E&E) industry respondents intend to raise investment by more than 30% over the next five years, while 55% said they will expand investment by 30% or less.
"American companies are not simply present in Malaysia; they are increasingly anchored here," the chamber's chief executive Siobhan Das said at an event in Kuala Lumpur marking the publication of the report.
The survey collected responses between March and May from 88 companies, including 64 American multinationals, spanning manufacturing, services and other industries. Twenty-seven of the 88 operate in the E&E sector. More broadly, of the 44 manufacturers surveyed, 94% said they plan to maintain or increase their Malaysian investment footprint.
The manufacturing respondents reported 42.86 billion ringgit ($10.5 billion) in total project costs embedded in Malaysian operations between 2024 and 2025, almost double the 28.47 billion ringgit reported in the previous 2022-2023 survey. The figures reflect investment in facilities, machinery and infrastructure rather than fresh spending announcements.
Paul Jones, a former U.S. ambassador to Malaysia who now serves as international affairs adviser at law firm Squire Patton Boggs, said Malaysia's appeal will increasingly depend on its capabilities. "The era of tariff arbitrage is ending," Jones said, arguing that companies will choose Malaysia for its capabilities and trustworthiness rather than tariff advantages.
Although tech investment is booming, the survey found that talent shortages in Malaysia remain a constraint. Among manufacturers, 68% identified gaps in advanced engineering and technical skills, while 65% cited gaps in digital, data and artificial intelligence capabilities.
"We want American companies to continue growing with Malaysia, and we want that growth to build deeper capabilities within Malaysia," Malaysian Investment Development Authority CEO Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said at the event.
