Nurses at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, among the most prestigious in the country and one of Harvard University’s teaching hospitals, are set to go on an indefinite strike after a months-long stalemate over salary and benefit negotiations.

Roughly 4,000 nurses, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, are set to begin their strike on October 14 after providing the required 10-day notice to hospital leadership on Friday, according to a statement from the union. The nurses group voted to authorize a strike in late September.

The potential work stoppage threatens to upend operations at one of the country’s leading academic medical centers. The hospital is part of the Mass General Brigham system, which includes over a dozen hospitals and is the largest private employer in Massachusetts. The nurses are seeking limits on the use of temporary replacements, lower health insurance costs and wage increases that they say are necessary to keep up with the rising cost of living.

“There is still time to reach an agreement that protects patient care and respects nurses. MGB needs to come back to the table and negotiate without preconditions,” said Kelly Morgan, a labor and delivery nurse and chair of the Massachusetts Nurses Association bargaining committee for the hospital.

Brigham and Women’s has plans in place to temporarily replace the nurses during a strike, a spokesperson for the hospital said on Friday, adding that the remaining issues in the contract negotiations are economic and don’t involve patient or workplace safety.

In July, the nurses held a one-day strike, which was followed by a four-day lockout during which the hospital utilized temporary nurses.
