Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Friday stressed the need for a comprehensive regional de-escalation agreement during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The two sides discussed efforts to reduce regional tensions and ways to build on the strategic partnership between Jordan and the US in various fields, according to a statement by Jordan’s Royal Hashemite Court.
Abdullah emphasized the need for a comprehensive de-escalation agreement that would safeguard the security and sovereignty of Arab states. He also stressed the “pivotal role” of the US in supporting efforts to achieve regional stability.
The call came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following US attacks on sites in Iran and Iranian attacks on what Tehran said were US military facilities and equipment in Arab countries. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June, but negotiations have since stalled.
Abdullah also warned of the repercussions of Israeli escalation in southern Syria, reiterating Jordan’s support for Syria’s efforts to strengthen its security, stability and territorial sovereignty.
The Jordanian monarch also referred to the outcome of the latest round of the Aqaba Process meetings, held in France on Sept. 17, which focused on mobilizing international support for the Lebanese army and enabling it to carry out its responsibilities in maintaining the country’s security and stability.
Launched at Abdullah’s initiative in 2015, the Aqaba Process seeks to strengthen coordination, cooperation and the exchange of expertise among regional and international partners in combating terrorism and extremism.
