Hong Kong has become the latest stop on Gianni Infantino’s global tour to shore up support ahead of next year’s Fifa presidential election.
The under-fire boss, who is still recovering from the fallout of his ill-fated plan to sell off the World Cup, arrived in the city on Friday and is expected to stay for the inaugural Fifa Asean Challenge Cup final between Hong Kong and Cambodia at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday. While Eric Fok Kai-shan, chairman of the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) has done everything he can to avoid confirming his support for Infantino, when asked about his stance ahead of the fledgling tournament, Fok said that “whoever supports Hong Kong football development, we will support, and we are working closely with Fifa on delivering this landmark event”.
Infantino’s expected presence in Hong Kong this week has been a poorly kept secret, although both Fifa and the HKFA have greeted any suggestion that the Fifa boss meet the media in the city with long bouts of silence.
Instead, Infantino announced his arrival with a series of pictures on his official Instagram account of him alongside the likes of HKFA president Pui Kwan-kay, Fok and CEO Charles Cheung.
“What a delight to be in Hong Kong, China, as the Football Association of Hong Kong, China, are successfully hosting the Fifa Asean Challenge Cup, with an historic final taking place tomorrow,” Infantino wrote.
