The World Health Organization says drug-resistant bacterial infections, known as antimicrobial resistance, kill roughly one million people worldwide every year. A WHO official said the toll means the threat can no longer be called a silent pandemic, noting that proven interventions already exist to prevent and control it.

The World Health Organization says drug-resistant bacterial infections are killing roughly one million people worldwide each year. The infections, grouped under the term antimicrobial resistance, occur when bacteria evolve to survive treatments that once reliably cleared them, leaving fewer effective options for patients.

A WHO official said the scale of the death toll means antimicrobial resistance should no longer be described as a silent pandemic, arguing that the threat has become too large and too visible to be treated as a hidden problem. The official stressed that proven interventions already exist to prevent and control the spread of resistant infections.

Public health specialists have long warned that overuse of antibiotics in humans, animals and agriculture accelerates the emergence of resistant strains. The WHO's statement adds to pressure on governments and health systems to strengthen surveillance, infection control and responsible antibiotic use in the coming years.
