TOKYO -- The task of turning Nidec around after a significant accounting scandal that leaves it on the brink of delisting is in the hands of new President and CEO Michio Kaida, who rose from a group company to join the Japanese motor maker's top ranks.
Kaida, previously chief technology officer, was chosen to replace Mitsuya Kishida, who abruptly resigned Tuesday as Nidec's board held him responsible for losses from the fraud. The company on Thursday disclosed 288 billion yen ($1.82 billion) in impairment losses over the five years through fiscal 2024, on top of the 632.1 billion yen in impairment losses booked for last fiscal year.
Kaida came up through Read Electronics, a semiconductor inspection equipment maker that Nidec bought into in 1997 and later turned into a subsidiary.
他走遍全球进行谈判,培养北美科技巨头作为客户,并将Read(后来更名为日本电产Advance Technology)打造成该集团最赚钱的公司之一。
After becoming Read's president in 2003, Kaida increased sales of equipment for printed circuit boards and expanded into products such as probe cards. He traveled the globe for negotiations, cultivating North American tech giants as customers, and built Read -- later renamed Nidec Advance Technology -- into one of the group's most profitable companies.
"He's a manager with extraordinary problem-solving abilities and inquisitiveness," a former Nidec executive said.
Kaida was tapped in 2024 as CTO of Nidec itself, where he broke down barriers between group companies to promote technical collaboration. He has guided Nidec's foray into aviation motors, which the company regards as a growth field.
He also has demonstrated determination with a corporate turnaround before. When Read's earnings took a turn for the worse while he was an executive there, Kaida scrambled to secure funding, using his own home as collateral. "He's got guts," said an insider who knew Kaida at the time.
At Thursday's news conference, Nidec board member Soichiro Sakuma said Kaida was chosen "simply because he's someone who can turn Nidec around into a manufacturer that can grow in a healthy and sustainable way." New Nidec CEO Michio Kaida spoke at a news conference on Oct. 1. The fact that Kaida was not involved in the accounting fraud likely was also a decisive mark in his favor.
"I was not questioned for even a second by the third-party committee" handling the investigation, Kaida said Thursday. He also led the drafting process for the improvement plan and status report that Nidec submitted to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which has put the company on a special alert list that eventually could result in delisting.
Nidec founder Shigenobu Nagamori also respected Kaida's management skills. A Nidec insider recalled that Nagamori often told executives to learn from him.
Concerns exist that this high praise could be interpreted as Kaida having close ties to Nagamori. The investigative committee's report on the accounting fraud faulted Nagamori's "absolute authority" and urged Nidec to "break away from being 'Mr. Nagamori's company.'" At Thursday's news conference, Kaida noted that Nidec Advance Technology was the sole Nidec group company to go public after having been unlisted, and said he was "extremely grateful" to Nagamori for letting him achieve that dream.
An executive at an auditing firm questioned, based on Kaida's comments at the news conference, whether the new CEO really "intends to break away from the past." Though Kaida has stressed that he has no intention of going back to the past, market players will be watching his commitment to reform.
Besides Kaida, Nidec's board has only two internal members, both of whom joined in 2025, leaving it with a dearth of directors familiar with the business as a whole. Kaida will have to bear much of the responsibility for both running Nidec and leading the reforms it needs.
