It was 9 am, on a July day in 2026, in a Ukrainian prison surrounded by fields of sunflowers. "A minute of silence," announced the guard. The ticking of the clock echoed through the hall, and about 20 inmates, dressed in blue robes and headscarves, stood in front of their cell doors, just as people were across the rest of Ukraine, paying tribute to the victims of the Russian invasion. Among them, at the end of the corridor, a slight woman with short hair and round cheeks stood out. Anastasiia Yasagashvili, with shimmering lipstick and long star-shaped earrings, quietly murmured a prayer to drown out the somber ticking and the Ukrainian anthem that followed.
"A prisoner's habit," explained the 23-year-old woman. Meeting with Le Monde for a six-hour interview in an office at the prison, without a guard present in the room, she recounted her story as a Ukrainian collaborator, sitting across from a window overlooking vegetable gardens tended by the inmates.
In November 2024, Nastia, as everyone calls her, was tried for denouncing her father, her husband, her in-laws and her sister-in-law to the Russian occupiers who had taken over her village of Shevchenkivskyi – a settlement of barely 10 streets and 800 inhabitants in southeastern Ukraine – and for working for the FSB (Federal Security Service of Russia), the successor to the KGB. In the court in Zaporizhzhia, the word "derjzrada" ("high treason") was loudly and clearly uttered, and so was the verdict: 15 years in prison.
Everything began at the end of February 2022, when Russian troops coming from Crimea seized a large part of her home region of Zaporizhzhia. The terrifying shelling from the port of Mariupol, just 70 kilometers from Shevchenkivskyi, fueled the mounting anxiety. Panic swept through the village. Some people snatched bread from grocery stores and sedatives from pharmacies, while others pried street signs from their posts to confuse the occupying forces. Very quickly, like many residents of her region, Nastia began to wonder: Should she wait for the Russians to settle in?
