The team excavating the site of a former mother-and-baby institution in County Galway has uncovered the remains of another 10 children.

The latest update in the ongoing search in Tuam brings the total number of infant remains found to 109. mother-and-baby institution was in operation from 1925 until 1961.

It came to international attention in 2014 - after local researcher Catherine Corless found 796 death certificates for children and babies who were in the institution, but no burial records.

The excavation began in July 2025, and the latest update covers a period of 11 weeks until 30 September this year. The 10 sets of remains which were recovered during that time were found in an area in the south-west of the site. All 109 of the bodies which have been found during the excavation so far were in coffins.
为便于继续进行挖掘工作，团队搭建了一顶可伸缩的新型模块化帐篷；这座新帐篷的覆盖面积比之前拆除的两顶小帐篷更大。
The team has erected a new modular tent, which can be expanded and reduced in size, to help facilitate the excavation as it continues. The new shelter covers a larger total area than two smaller tents, which have been dismantled.

The dig is being carried out by an agency known as the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT).

It is also collecting DNA samples from relatives to help identify the bodies which are found.
ODAIT表示已收集到12份新的DNA样本，使总样本数量达到74份。
ODAIT said it has collected 12 new samples – bringing the total number of 74.

Legislation is being amended to enable first cousins to give samples. ODAIT said the bill was expected to be published in the coming days.

The team has continued to find historical artefacts on the site. In recent weeks, these have included buttons and a metal window latch.

Full excavation has not yet begun in the area of a memorial garden, where in 2017 investigators found "significant quantities" of remains in underground chambers.

The institution at Tuam was owned by Galway County Council and run by a religious order, the Bon Secours Sisters.

The order has previously acknowledged that children and infants were "buried in a disrespectful and unacceptable way", and apologised. It has contributed £2.14m towards the cost of the excavation.

Galway County Council also apologised for "failing mothers and children" after the inquiry report in 2021.
