Air Chief Marshall AP Singh described the process as a “two-way activity”, saying that a contract depended not only on the Defence Acquisition Wing and the Ministry of Defence, but also on the other side “coming around”.

Before the current financial year ends, India could ink a deal for the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) with France, Air Chief Marshall AP Singh, Indian Air Force Chief said on Saturday in New Delhi.

In February 2026, India’s Defence Acquisition Council gave an Acceptance of Necessity nod for the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter jets for the IAF. “The majority of MRFA to be procured will be manufactured in India,” the release said.

The force has about 29 squadrons against an authorised strength of 42.5. Singh has said it needs to induct 36 to 40 fighter aircraft annually to arrest the decline and begin building its strength.

The 114 Rafales would add to the 36 already operated by the IAF. The Navy has separately ordered 26 Rafale-M aircraft for carrier operations. If the MRFA contract goes ahead, the combined Rafale fleet across the two services would total 176 once all aircraft are inducted.
