Ltd. agreed to pay as much as $1.6 billion to jointly develop and sell an experimental treatment for rare kidney and liver diseases, expanding the Australian biotech company’s push into kidney medicine.

CSL will pay Alentis Therapeutics AG $355 million upfront, with the Swiss drug developer eligible for as much as $1.2 billion more if the treatment, lixudebart, reaches certain commercial milestones, CSL said in a statement Monday.

The treatment is being tested in a mid-stage trial in people with a rare autoimmune disease that can rapidly and permanently damage the kidneys.

The deal gives CSL another potential therapy in an area it has identified for expansion beyond its established blood-plasma and vaccine businesses.

Lixudebart is designed to tackle both inflammation and scarring that can lead to lasting organ damage, and the companies also plan to test it against another chronic kidney disorder and a liver disease for which CSL says there is currently no available treatment.

CSL will fund completion of the current mid-stage kidney trial, a planned late-stage study and trials in the two other diseases.

If the drug reaches the market, CSL will receive 55% of global profits and Alentis 45%.

An interim analysis of 26 patients in the ongoing trial showed improvement in measures of kidney function after 24 weeks, CSL said. The drug is still experimental and hasn’t been approved for these uses.
