Extreme heat is increasingly threatening pregnant women and babies, according to a multi-country survey of maternity health workers that offers a frontline view of the health consequences of a warming climate.

Almost three-quarters of 1,000 health professionals surveyed across India, Australia, Brazil, the UK and Zimbabwe said they had seen an increase in heat-related cases or complications affecting pregnant women over the past five years. Some 76% reported an increase affecting fetuses or newborns.

The findings come as governments gather for climate talks ahead of next month’s 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Turkey, and amid mounting evidence linking heat exposure during pregnancy with premature birth, stillbirth, low birth weight and complications for mothers.

The survey was commissioned by Wellcome, the London-based health research foundation, and conducted online by Censuswide from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1. It included 200 maternal health professionals in each of the five countries.

Some 98% of respondents said they had cared for a pregnant woman whose health they believed had been harmed by extreme heat, while 99% said the same of a baby.

About 23% had seen pregnancy complications requiring additional monitoring or treatment that they believed were linked to heat exposure. Heat is also making it harder for some women to get care.

About 27% of health workers said extreme temperatures were making access to health services more difficult, while 29% reported an increase in urgent or emergency presentations.

More than nine in 10 respondents said they wanted more training and resources to protect pregnant women during extreme heat.

Wellcome is calling for the World Health Organization to develop clinical guidance on heat and pregnancy and for governments to improve surveillance of the effects of rising temperatures on maternal and newborn health.
