Gerard Baker rightly celebrates Pope Leo XIV’s summons to a secularized West to “look up” again (“There’s One World Leader We Can All Look Up To,” Editor at Large, Sept. 29).

But looking upward need not mean looking away from political tyranny. As Mr. Baker reminds us, John Paul II galvanized his fellow Poles against their communist masters and condemned human-rights abuses in Cuba. Fulton Sheen likewise fiercely denounced communism and Nazism, as well as the cultural decay he believed left the West vulnerable to tyranny.
