Kang Gyu-ri is not from Seoul, and it shows. Is it the slightly awkward style in a capital obsessed with appearances? Or the smile that struggles to conceal an obvious tension? At 25 years old, the young woman with auburn-dyed hair has already lived a thousand lives that have taught her to proceed with caution. Her gaze, highlighted by glitter mascara, borders on severity. Her name is an alias. "I won't tell you the real one," she said. "I picked this pseudonym at random. It has no reference."

There was no point in insisting. Met in a sashimi restaurant just steps from Yeongdeungpo Station in the heart of Seoul after her international relations classes at Ewha Womans University, Kang agreed to lift the veil on her life on both sides of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that splits the Korean peninsula in two. Her answers were concise and precise. "I fled North Korea in October 2023." How? "By boat, with my mother, my aunt and a sailor." From which region? "The Kangwon region. I won't tell you exactly where." Her anonymity is the condition for telling her story.

Kang is determined to protect the relatives she left behind in the North. Kangwon is located in the southeast of North Korea, along the DMZ. On the southern side, just a short distance away, the province is called Gangwon. "It took us 44 hours to get there. We had to cover our tracks. We went as far out to sea as possible before turning back. Northern sailors saw us, but they did nothing." The boat arrived in Sokcho, about 50 kilometers from the DMZ. "People found us. The police came. And that was it, we were in the South."
