Bank International Chief Executive Officer Michael Hoellerer said the Austrian lender’s efforts to exit Russia could gain fresh momentum if a €3.15 billion ($3.5 billion) windfall payment from a court ruling materializes.
A Vienna court last month issued a default judgment against Rasperia Trading, ordering it to pay damages of about €3.15 billion to Raiffeisen after a complex asset swap involving the two companies was axed. The payment would be the first cash the Austrian lender extracts — if indirectly — from its Russian subsidiary since sanctions made the transfer of excess profits from the unit impossible.
“We have some more steps in this very complex process,” Hoellerer said at a Bloomberg event in Vienna. If successful, “then it brings in flexibility on the next steps toward exiting Russia.”Hoellerer has pledged to shake up Austria’s second-biggest lender since taking over this year. Raiffeisen is among a small number of Western lenders that have maintained operations in Russia in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While it reduced business in the country, efforts to sell the unit have been stymied because it’s been unable to convince authorities in Russia, the EU and the US to sign off on a deal.
The deal with Rasperia, agreed about three years ago, was meant to allow Raiffeisen to repatriate some of its Russian profits, but the Austrian lender ended up scrapping it because it couldn’t get the backing of regulators. A Russian court subsequently ordered Raiffeisen’s subsidiary in the country to pay billions of euros to Rasperia, a company previously affiliated with sanctioned businessman Oleg Deripaska. Raiffeisen, in turn, sued Rasperia in Austria.
The Vienna court’s ruling will be final if Rasperia does not appeal, and Raiffeisen has said it plans to submit an application to financial regulator FMA to release Rasperia’s Austrian assets in order to enforce the ruling.
Hoellerer said earlier on Monday that he’d quit Russia tomorrow if he could. His focus now primarily lies on securing court and regulatory approval in the damages claim against Rasperia he said.
Bloomberg reported last month that the lender is preparing to make Central Asia a new growth focus and may consider acquisitions, as Raiffeisen edges closer to the collecting the payment.
