Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will announce a new research initiative at the National Institutes of Health to study vaccine injuries on Monday, according to people familiar with the matter.
Kennedy will visit the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, to unveil the initiative, the people said.
Spokespeople for HHS and NIH didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
Before his failed presidential campaign, Kennedy served as the leader of Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group. He has championed the cause of people who believe immunizations cause a variety of complications far broader than those acknowledged by health experts, and has railed against dysfunction in the system designed to compensate those who experience vaccine injuries.
“For many years, you’ve asked questions from outside the government, as I did, and now I have the privilege and the responsibility of leading the department,” Kennedy said during a speech at Children’s Health Defense last month. “I can put the full weight of the federal government behind answering those questions.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention acknowledges that vaccines can cause side effects, but for the most part notes they are minor and resolve within a few days. The federal government monitors reports of adverse events for all medical products, including vaccines. Science first reported the plans to announce the research initiative last month.
