The city is moving the families off the waitlist with funding provided by the state.

NEW YORK — More than 10,000 New York City families who’ve been waiting for child care vouchers will now receive them, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday.

The city will move the families off the waitlist for the state Child Care Assistance Program, which provides subsidies to low- and middle-income families with children aged six weeks to 13 years old, and older for children with disabilities.

It’s supported by $1.2 billion allocated by Gov. Kathy Hochul in the state budget earlier this year, including $475 million specifically for child care vouchers — an amount that the city has to match.

On Monday, Mamdani dismissed cynics who he said “reject our efforts to deem universal child care a public good,” describing the voucher expansion as the latest effort to achieve that goal.
