TOKYO -- Almost every prefecture of Japan is home to more elderly residents than young children, the latest census data show, in another sign of the country's graying population.

In 2025, people aged 75 or older accounted for a larger proportion of the population than those aged 15 or younger in 46 out of Japan's 47 prefectures, with Okinawa the sole exception.

The proportion of children declined in all prefectures, including Okinawa, compared with the previous census in 2020. Overall, they made up 10.9% of the population, down 1.1 percentage point from 2020 to hit a record low. This could fall below 10% in the next census in 2030.

Meanwhile, the elderly make up 17.2% of the population, up 2.5 points from 2020.

The population of people aged 65 and over first surpassed that of children in 2000. The 75-and-over demographic outstripped children in 2015. Japan looks unlikely to reverse its declining birth rates in the short term.

Marriage trends serve as a barometer of those trends, since Japan has a low rate of births out of wedlock. The percentage of unmarried men stood at 36.3% in 2025, while the share among women was 26.4%. These figures climbed by 1.7 points and 1.5 points, respectively, compared to five years earlier.

Late marriages are also becoming more common. Among men, the percentage with spouses begins to exceed the percentage of unmarried at the 35-to-39 age bracket. For women, the range is 30 to 34 years. In 1995, those age groups were 30 to 34 years for men, and 25 to 29 for women.
