China is accelerating ultra-deep oil and gas development to expand domestic supply amid global energy uncertainties, with advances in exploration and extraction technologies unlocking harder-to-recover resources.
One key frontier is the resource-rich western region of Xinjiang, where PetroChina’s Hade-Fuman oilfield has produced more than 26 million tonnes of oil equivalent from reservoirs more than 6,000 metres underground, according to state broadcaster CCTV on Monday.
Wells deeper than 6,000 metres are generally classified as ultra-deep wells, where extraction is highly challenging due to extreme pressures and temperatures deep underground.
The Hade-Fuman oilfield is located in the Taklamakan Desert and comprises two fields: Hade and Fuman. The latter was China’s largest ultra-deep oilfield, with oil and gas resources exceeding one billion tonnes, according to PetroChina. The reserves were discovered in 2021, following the company’s breakthroughs in geological understanding and exploration technologies that helped unlock complex oil and gas reservoirs buried deep underground.
To tap the Fuman field, PetroChina said it had developed specialised drilling tools and technologies, successfully drilling wells with an average depth of more than 8,300 metres – a distance almost equivalent to the height of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
Chinese oil giants have stepped up domestic oil and gas exploration as Beijing seeks to strengthen energy security. The importance of such efforts has become more pronounced amid this year’s global energy turbulence, as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key conduit for Gulf oil and gas exports, have underscored vulnerabilities in global energy supply chains.
Under a five-year plan dedicated to the oil and gas sector, China was targeting a domestic supply of 440 million tonnes of oil equivalent by 2030, while 20,000 km of new long-distance oil and natural gas pipelines would be added, bringing the national network to 220,000 km – enough to circle the Earth more than five times.
Last year, China’s total oil and gas production reached a new high of 420 million tonnes of oil equivalent, with crude oil output hitting a record 216 million tonnes.
Beyond ultra-deep reservoirs in the desert, China is also expanding offshore oil and gas development. Among the latest is the Liuhua oilfield, located off the coast of Zhuhai in Guangdong province.
Discovered in the late 20th century, the field has undergone redevelopment since late 2024, with advances in China’s deepwater development technologies helping to improve extraction efficiency in challenging offshore conditions. The field’s cumulative crude oil output exceeded two million tonnes as of Saturday, CCTV reported.
