South Africa initially feared a serial killer was at work, but the reality may be even more disturbing. Since July, the bodies of 11 women have been discovered in Ekurhuleni, on the eastern edge of Johannesburg. Most of the victims were found naked or half-naked, violently beaten. After the police issued a warning urging caution in response to these crimes, fear spread across the city. Yet, according to the initial findings of the investigation, no links have been established between the murders. Gradually, the idea has taken hold that the horror may be nothing more than an appalling reflection of the everyday reality for women in one of the world's most dangerous countries for them.

According to the government, at least three women die every day at the hands of a partner or ex-partner in South Africa. This figure is nearly five times the global average. The true scale of femicides remains underestimated, as law enforcement does not keep an official tally of the total number of women killed nationwide. Described as a "pandemic" by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2020, gender-based and sexual violence was declared a national disaster in 2025.
