TOKYO -- U.S.-based artificial intelligence startup Applied Intuition has formed separate partnerships with Honda Motor and Nissan Motor to provide core technologies that support the development of software and other elements of next-generation vehicles.

The tie-ups announced Tuesday focus on software-defined vehicles, or SDVs, which use software to enhance automobile functions. Both Japanese automakers will use Applied Intuition's vehicle operating system (OS) and software tools for development.

Software-defined vehicles are built around an OS, which serves as a foundation for other software for functions such as vehicle controls and driver assistance. AI tools can accelerate software development.

In August, the two automakers said they plan to unify their vehicle operating systems. Though most of the shared OS will be the same, some differences will remain between the manufacturers' systems.

Both companies have worked with Applied Intuition before, and will collaborate individually with the AI startup to gain expertise specific to their needs, improving development efficiency while maintaining their uniqueness.

Applied Intuition

Applied Intuition views Japan as its second-largest market after the U.S. and plans to expand business there, partly due to the country's numerous finished-vehicle makers. The startup is expanding partnerships with Japanese companies generally.

In August 2024, the startup said it would collaborate with Isuzu Motors on automating commercial vehicles. In September 2025, Applied Intuition said it would work with heavy equipment maker Komatsu to bring vehicle functions to mining equipment.
