Three African countries have started Tafouk TV, a Russia-partnered broadcast channel, after throwing out Western journalists and cracking down on local media. The generals now have the mic.
Three African military governments launched a joint television channel with support from Russia last month, as part of a larger crackdown on journalists amid a worsening security crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa.
Tafouk TV, a channel with the tagline, “Television for a sovereign Africa,” started broadcasting in September and serves Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger — three countries that have in recent years distanced themselves from former allies like France. Last year, all three nations left a West African alliance known as ECOWAS and formed their own Alliance of Sahelian States.
Broadcasting from Bamako, Mali’s capital, the new channel is named after the Tamasheq word for “sun” and showcases content favorable to the juntas. One recent program was dedicated to the “civic and patriotic education” of middle-school children. Another accused the French of “plundering resources” at a Nigerien uranium mine. Music videos feature soldiers dancing in the back of pickup trucks and around military helicopters, singing flattering songs about their military leaders.
The worsening security situation in the three countries, which are battling armed groups affiliated with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, does not appear to be a programming priority.
Mali’s foreign minister, Abdoulaye Diop, said in a Facebook post that the channel was operating in a “hostile geopolitical context, marked by a hybrid war of narratives,” and that he hoped it would promote sovereignty and “dispel the darkness of terrorism.”
