Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) did not give a clear answer during a Tuesday debate on if he would serve his full term if he were to be reelected in November, according to multiple reports.
The Baltimore Banner reported that the governor dodged a question on whether he would see through the entire duration of a second term should he beat Republican Dan Cox this fall. The line of questioning came as some look to Moore as a promising Democratic contender for the 2028 presidential race.
When asked about staying in his role for another four years, the governor replied, “Being the governor of Maryland has been the honor of a lifetime,” the Banner reported. “And I would not be running for reelection if I was not committed to the people of Maryland,” he added.
Moore was then pushed for a definitive answer, to which he said, “I gave the answer. I am committed to the people of Maryland. That’s why I am running for reelection.”
The Maryland governor, first elected in 2022, has denied he plans to pursue the presidency in 2028, telling NBC News last year that "I’m not running for president." He also asserted at the time that, should he reclaim the gubernatorial seat, "I’ll be serving a full term" In September 2025, Moore said he was “living the dream” as governor after announcing his reelection bid.
The Democrat has been a frequent critic of President Trump throughout his tenure in Maryland's highest office.
“I’m excited about running for reelection. And, you know, I’m literally a person who was raised by an immigrant, single mom, who had handcuffs on my wrist when I was 11 years old, who’s now serving as the 63rd governor of my state and the first Black governor in the history of the state of Maryland,” Moore told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “OutFront” at the time. “I am — I am living the dream right now, and our state is doing well,” he added.
“And I’m excited to go back in front of the people of my state.”Moore appears safe in his seat, as the nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates his race as solidly Democratic less than a month before Election Day.
