The Netherlands plans to further unwind its financial crisis-era stake in ABN Amro Bank NV.

The Dutch government seeks to trim its holding to 10.5%, from the current 20.7%, the state investment vehicleNLFI said in a statement on Wednesday.

ABN Amro had a market value of about €34.5 billion ($38.7 billion) at Tuesday’s close.

ABN Amro’s shares have risen strongly this year as Chief Executive Officer Marguerite Berard works to restructure the firm by cutting jobs, selling less profitable businesses, while targeting an increase in return on equity to at least 12% in 2028.

She has also sought to expand the bank’s scale with a €960-million deal to acquire NIBC Bank, which followed the acquisition of German wealth manager Hauck Aufhäuser Lampe AG.

The state has been ABN Amro’s largest holder since it bailed out the lender at the height of the crisis for about €22 billion.

The Amsterdam-headquartered lender was re-listed on the stock exchange in 2015, with government steadily retreating over more than a decade. In late July, it said it sold shares worth about €2.5 billion. “NLFI and ABN Amro have agreed on a new arrangement,” according to the statement.

“It has been agreed that the information rights granted to NLFI will remain in place for as long as NLFI retains a stake of 10% or more in ABN AMRO. As soon as NLFI’s stake in ABN AMRO falls below 10%, the Relationship Agreement will terminate.”
