Mail Group Ltd. plans to shed as many as 2,500 staff by the end of next year, as Britain’s postal service tries to get a handle on costs.

The review will lead to job cuts in head office and support functions, as the company implements universal service reform and grapples with a slump in letter volumes, Royal Mail said in a statement Wednesday.

The move comes just over a year after Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky completed a £3.6 billion ($4.8 billion) takeover of the parent of Royal Mail, which traces its roots to 1516 when King Henry VIII reigned.

The cuts will be through natural attrition and voluntary redundancies and won’t affect workers who deliver letters and parcels, Royal Mail said. The company employs more than 131,000 people.
