Ever heard of a movement built around cockroaches? India has. The Cockroach Janta Party turned a “cockroach” remark into a youth political identity. France now has its own, very different, cockroach story. There, a 17-year-old student described her school simply as, “There are cockroaches and rats everywhere in the school.”There, the cockroaches are not a metaphor. And what began as complaints inside classrooms soon spilled onto the streets. Meet the youngest faces leading France’s student protest movementFrance’s Justice Ministry says 5,060 people have been taken into custody, 87% of them minors.
Of those, 1,802 face prosecution, including 1,483 minors. Two of the three prominent protest leaders are teenagers, making them among the youngest faces to lead a movement of this scale across the globe. But there is another twist to it: US President Donald Trump said, “This (protest) is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country.”
India Today OSINT mapped the reported protests across France to trace what triggered the movement, how it spread, who emerged as its leaders, and what France’s immigration data tells us about the wider demographic backdrop.
The map shows the reported scale of protests across France on October 6, with red circles sized by estimated crowd numbers. Paris recorded over 56,000 protesters, the largest reported turnout, followed by major mobilisations in Lyon, Rennes, Nmes and MarseilleWhat has happened in France? On September 17, the complaint was simple: not enough teachers, overcrowded classrooms and poor school conditions. Four days later, students at Lyce Saint-Exupry in Crteil, a city south-east of Paris, joined the mobilisation and began blocking their school.
Within days, the grievance had spread far beyond one campus, helped by videos circulating on social media. By October 1, more than 1,020 high schools had been affected, including 222 blockades.
From a local school grievance to nationwide protests, France’s student mobilisation rapidly escalated between September 17 and October 6The scale of the unrest has been striking, but so is the age of those caught up in it. As per a report released by France’s Justice Ministry, 5,060 people have been taken into custody, 4,406 of them minors.“More than 170 students, 78 school staff and over 600 police officers had also been injured during the unrest,” the report saidSo what are these teenagers asking for?
学生领袖Ryad Rani(隶属于Union Syndicale Lycenne组织)在与教育部长Douard Geffray会面后,呼吁抗议活动继续进行。
More teachers and staff, less crowded classrooms, better school buildings and resources, and changes to Parcoursup, France’s university admissions system. Student leader Ryad Rani, president of the Union Syndicale Lycenne, called for the mobilisation to continue after meeting Education Minister douard Geffray. At the same meeting, Nathanal Combary, president of Renouveau Lycen, urged students to remain peaceful, saying violence was damaging their cause.
The movement has since taken on a life of its own with Gen Alpha rising, along with Gen Z. 15- 17-year-olds are blocking hundreds of schools and demanding better learning conditions. France is therefore seeing a distinctly younger form of mobilisation, with the youngest edge of Gen Z and the generation coming after it growing up in the same hyper-connected environment.
But the government says the protest has also crossed into violence. Interior Minister Laurent Nuez described the situation as a “climate of unacceptable violence” and said police would intervene systematically when there were clashes, damage or violence.
Does immigration have a role here? France’s immigrant population has risen sharply over the past decade, reaching 7.97 million in 2025, or 11.6% of the total population.
The animation tracks how the country’s immigrant and foreign national populations have changed since 2016That question entered the story after Donald Trump claimed the unrest was about “out of control mass migration”, adding: “This isn't about schools, this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country!”France certainly has a major immigration story. France’s National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) estimates that 7.97 million immigrants lived in France in 2025, equal to 11.6% of the population.
Nearly half were born in Africa and 30.3% in Europe. Religion is also part of France’s demographic picture. The INSEE INED TeO2 (Trajectories and Origins 2) survey, a joint study by INSEE and the National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED), found that among people aged 18 to 59 in metropolitan France in 2019 to 2020, 51% reported no religion, 29% were Catholic and 10% Muslim.
But among immigrants who reported a religion, the picture is markedly different: 55% were Muslim, compared with 21% Catholic and 18% other Christian. But the distinction is important. Algeria is the largest source of France’s immigrant population at 12.6%, followed by Morocco at 11.7%. Overall, 49.2% of immigrants were born in AfricaFor centuries, European powers built empires across Africa, Asia and the Americas, with France among the largest.
Today, immigration remains one of Europe’s biggest demographic and political questions. INSEE estimates that 7.97 million immigrants lived in France in 2025, or 11.6% of the population, with 49.2% born in Africa and 30.3% in Europe. Palestinian flags were also reported at some of the demonstrations and visible in protest footage.
But rising immigration numbers, or scattered political symbols at demonstrations, do not by themselves explain what brought thousands of French teenagers onto the streets. The documented trigger of this particular movement, however, is the state of its schools, public services, and the future of its young people.- Ends
