These students in northern India are fed up with their run-down schools and want officials to do something about it. Gen Alpha students, 16 and younger, were inspired to protest this summer after Gen Z demonstrations over university exams and education policies led to the successful resignation of the education minister. Now, public schools across India are under scrutiny for their poor facilities. There have been several instances of ceilings collapsing, which have led to injuries and even killed seven children last year.

So students like 16-year-old Tannu Sharma are finding their voice and pushing for change. Sharma said issues with the education system begin even before she steps foot on campus. She has taken the same unpaved roads to school since the first grade. Many students also have to cross a river, which gets flooded during the rainy season. Sharma and her classmates have also raised concerns about the conditions at their school. There aren’t enough classrooms for the nearly 200 students between the grades of first and 12th, so some classes are held outside in the heat.

Sharma said they don’t have enough teachers, working bathrooms or even clean drinking water. Then in August, part of a ceiling in one of the classrooms collapsed. Angry about what happened, Sharma and her classmates took inspiration from the youth movement, also known as the Cockroach Janta Party, and its call to action. The students staged a sit-in, and children as young as 5 participated.

Videos of the protest circulated online and caught the attention of the Cockroach Janta Party. The next day, one of the leaders from the movement showed up at the school to help amplify the students’ voices. The Cockroach Janta Party also helped students draft a list of demands, like building new classrooms, fixing the bathrooms and building a bridge over the nearby river. The authorities have begun addressing some of the issues, like tearing down the classroom where the ceiling had collapsed.
夏尔马表示，如果没有那些年长榜样们的帮助，她根本无法走到今天这一步。她希望有朝一日也能激励下一代人。
Sharma says she couldn’t have imagined coming this far without the help of the older role models, and hopes she can inspire the next generation one day.
