TOKYO/KUALA LUMPUR -- SoftBank Group and Grab plan to develop AI infrastructure in the eastern Malaysian state of Sarawak under a broader agreement that also includes a local energy group, the companies said Thursday.

According to the announcement, SoftBank, Grab and Petroleum Sarawak (Petros) have agreed to explore the development of an artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure platform in Sarawak, Malaysia's largest state by size that is known for its rich natural resources and green energy industries.

"The three parties will collaborate to develop a roadmap for the phased development of the platform," they said, without specifying any projects. "The collaboration will also explore opportunities across the wider AI value chain, including AI compute and services, advanced technologies, robotics, local workforce and community development." SoftBank Group, led by founder Masayoshi Son, is investing more heavily in AI infrastructure, moving beyond the tech startups that were the main focus of its Vision Fund. In the U.S., it is a major partner in Stargate, a project launched with OpenAI and others that aims to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure.

Sarawak State has been working to develop a technology sector, touting its rich resources to foreign businesses.

During the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) on Monday, state Premier Abang Johari Openg outlined plans for a Kuching AI Data Campus, to be developed through a public-private partnership with dedicated power, water and computing infrastructure. He also described an AI grid being developed to connect computing resources and draw on the state's renewable energy capacity.
