The European Commission on Thursday urged Russia to provide information about a reported plague case in Siberia “as soon as possible,” saying more details are needed to assess potential cross-border risks.
“Russia should make information about the plague available as soon as possible. This is what we need,” European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova told reporters in Brussels.
Hrncirova said the EU held a meeting with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday, during which the UN health agency sought further clarification and information from Russia.
“We need information from Russia,” she said, stressing the importance of Moscow sharing “timely, precise, exact information” under its membership in the WHO European Region.
According to information provided by Russian authorities, an epidemiological investigation was conducted after a case of community-acquired pneumonia was identified in an employee of the Irkutsk Scientific Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia and the Far East.
She said experts need the information to assess the epidemiological situation and determine whether there could be implications for other countries. “The whole world is waiting for the information from Russia,” she added.
Hrncirova said it was not for the European Commission to determine whether Russia was in breach of WHO rules, noting that the WHO is the EU’s “main interlocutor” on the issue.
According to the spokesperson, the WHO is still seeking clarification from Russia, meaning that the EU currently lacks sufficient information to assess the epidemiological situation and the potential risk to other countries.
