A French administrative court has upheld a six-month closure of a private school attended by Muslim students in the northern city of Creil, Oise Hebdo reported Thursday.
The Administrative Court of Amiens rejected two applications filed by associations managing the Al Ghazali school seeking to suspend the closure order issued by the Oise prefecture and allow the school to reopen.
The court said the school did not provide all the necessary “safety guarantees” for students, despite construction at the facility, according to the ruling.
The closure order took effect Sept. 30 and applies for six months. About 250 students attend the school at the primary, middle and high school levels.
The court also rejected the managing associations' argument that the closure would have serious financial consequences, saying they had not established the “particular urgency” required to suspend the order. Families have 15 days to enroll their children in other schools. The school underwent safety inspections in June and September.
A safety commission reportedly identified “irregularities” in the building used for primary education, prompting the prefecture to require corrective measures.
The prefecture subsequently ordered the closure on Sept. 29, citing concerns about the use of certain rooms, the school's operating arrangements, and “safety” issues. The associations managing the school can appeal the decision within 10 days.
