A Haitian worker with Temporary Protected Status, right, cooks an order of mussels in the kitchen at Half Shell Raw Bar in Key West, Fla., Friday, July 24, 2026, days before his employment was suspended when the work permits of hundreds of thousands of Haitians with temporary status expired on Monda

As the administration looks to outcompete countries such as Canada, a new approach toward one group of immigrants offers the opportunity for an easy win — including for American businesses and communities.

The administration recently ended Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Haitians, many of whom had been lawfully working and contributing before their work authorization ended alongside their protections from deportation.

Many are looking north for refuge and opportunity — to Canada. Haitians who make it there, or to other countries, leave the U.S. with the skills and knowledge they gained here and that are critical to our workforce, especially in sectors such as health care and senior care.

The loss of these workers already hurts, especially in states with large populations of Haitians who had temporary status — with Florida at the top of the list by far. That some would take their talents to our economic competitors compounds the pain.

We’re not saying that Temporary Protected Status should be permanent. But abrupt ends to it, such as for Haitians, underscore the need for an immigration solution for individuals who have built their lives in the U.S., and for the employers and communities who depend on them.

Just ask Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who has said repeatedly that ending protections for Haitians would hurt his state and especially the city of Springfield, where many Haitians live. Detaining and deporting Haitians would be “a blow to Springfield” and “a blow to the state of Ohio,” he said in July.

“These are people who have helped Springfield really come back,” DeWine said. “The Haitians who are living there and [are] employed there, they came there to work, and they came there because there were jobs that were not being filled by other people.”DeWine also cited the dangerous situation in Haiti — a point faith leaders in Ohio, as well as Florida, Maryland and elsewhere, have made in urging a compassionate solution for Haitian former TPS recipients.

DeWine also predicted that many Haitians would flee to other countries to avoid returning to Haiti, and many Haitians have said as much. In the words of Evka from Florida, “[To] be pulled away to a place that has no safety or security? ‘Scary’ doesn’t even encompass what goes through my mind right now.”But we don’t have to push Haitians to seek safety elsewhere and give our competitors an economic advantage. Instead, Republicans and Democrats should work together on a solution that allows longtime contributors to remain in the United States.

A bipartisan bill the U.S. House passed in April would be a short-term solution. Recognizing the dire conditions in Haiti, it essentially would restore TPS for Haitians.
