Angered by President Trump’s statements and policies, I find myself almost as impatient with my own Democratic Party’s lack of positive alternatives. This frustration extends to the simple-minded and empty offerings of the Democratic Socialists of America, whose ideas were discredited decades ago.

After further reflection I have recognized that each generation’s thinking is guided by its experiences growing up. I was born in 1934 and will soon celebrate my 92nd birthday. My poor and hardworking parents struggled through the Depression. My father, an unschooled sawmill worker, was a naturalized citizen. He and his mill pals went on strike for three years for the right to unionize. They were surrounded by propaganda and class appeals reminiscent of today’s socialists.
