The letter of imprisoned Russian journalist Ivan Safronov: 'Like Jean Valjean, I know what captivity is, and I know how to cherish freedom'

It was a crushing verdict. On September 5, 2022, in Moscow, at the end of a closed-door trial during which the judge read only the introduction and the verdict, journalist Ivan Safronov was sentenced to 22 years in a strict-regime penal colony. He was 32 years old at the time. An expert on military affairs and former defense correspondent for the daily newspaper Kommersant, he had been arrested on July 7, 2020, and charged with "high treason" for having allegedly transmitted several analytical articles containing government secrets to a Czech colleague and a German political scientist.

His supporters denounced the conviction as retaliation by the "security services." Since then, Safronov has been serving his sentence in Penal Colony IK-17, located in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia. Like all of the colony's inmates, he is forced to work, and so he spends his days in the site's sewing workshops. In the evenings, he reads. And rereads. One of the books his former partner, Ksenia Mironova, sent him, after he requested it, is a Russian-language copy of Les Misérables (1862), by Victor Hugo. He has thus once again dived into the story of Jean Valjean, who spent 19 years in a penal colony. Le Monde asked Safronov to write a piece about reading this book while in prison. He sent correspondence through Mironova.

While the prison administration was able to read his letters, they were not altered in any way. Safronov, whom Amnesty International considers a "prisoner of conscience," is now 36 years old. He still has 16 years left to serve. Benjamin Quénelle On Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo "War is qualified only by its object. There is no such thing as foreign war or civil war; there is only just and unjust war.

Until that day when the grand human agreement is concluded, war, that at least which is the effort of the future, which is hastening on against the past, which is lagging in the rear, may be necessary. What have we to reproach that war with? War does not become a disgrace, the sword does not become a disgrace, except when it is used for assassinating the right, progress, reason, civilization, truth.

Then war, whether foreign or civil, is iniquitous; it is called crime." I happen to belong to the category of people who are convinced that reading books is not enough: You absolutely must reread them. Only then do they reveal themselves in a new light, only then can you discover not only the plot but also the deeper meaning hidden within the work, that which does not appear on the surface. I have held Les Misérables by Victor Hugo in my hands on three occasions: at school, at Lefortovo Prison in Moscow and in the strict-regime penal colony in Krasnoyarsk, where I am serving what is called a sentence. And from where I am writing this text.
