The European Commission on Friday approved €40.5 million ($45.4 million) in state aid to support French transport, agricultural, fishery and aquaculture companies facing increased fuel prices amid the Middle East crisis.
The approval comes as rising fuel prices put pressure on businesses and prompt governments to provide financial support to cushion the impact on key economic sectors.
Under the two schemes, €23.3 million will be allocated to transport companies and €17.2 million to agricultural, fishery and aquaculture businesses, according to a statement. The aid will be provided through soft loans with a fixed interest rate of 3.8%, backed by a state guarantee.
The schemes were approved under the EU's Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), adopted on April 29, to allow member states to support businesses affected by the crisis.
