A Hong Kong news commentator accused of violating the national security law has denied exposing police intelligence operations, telling a court that details of his meeting with officers were already public knowledge before he posted them online.

Wong Kwok-ngon, 72, who ran a YouTube commentary channel under the pen name Wong On-yin, stood trial at the District Court on Friday. He is the first person in Hong Kong to be prosecuted for allegedly prejudicing an investigation into national security offences by unlawfully disclosing details of a police interview.

He was also charged with knowingly publishing seditious publications in connection with videos covering local and international news.

In court, Wong questioned why two sergeants from the police force’s National Security Department considered their meeting with him on December 2, 2025, confidential when media outlets had already widely reported that he was under investigation.

Wong and other residents had planned to hold a press conference that day about the Wang Fuk Court blaze, which killed 168 people last November. But the event was called off after national security officers invited them to a meeting the same day.

Wong posted two videos on his YouTube channel the following day discussing the meeting.

Prosecutors said in their opening submission that Wong’s commentary had exceeded the bounds of “fair comment” because he repeatedly portrayed the National Security Department’s operations as a tool of suppression.

They said Wong had signed a non-disclosure declaration at the start of the December 2 meeting, agreeing to keep everything discussed confidential.

The court heard that Wong, a highly educated former employee of the Independent Commission Against Corruption, told Sergeants Li Pak-him and Wong Ping-kiu that he understood the terms.

Li said Wong did not ask any questions about the declaration but asked whether he was under investigation.

Sergeant Wong said the purpose of the meeting was to gather intelligence from the commentator, who was not a suspect at the time, and assess whether the planned press conference might pose a national security risk. Both officers testified that they had asked him about the background to the press conference. Li said he had reiterated the confidentiality requirement at the end of the hour-long meeting.

Wong asked Li: “I replied to you at the time that it was already in the newspaper that you guys were having a meeting with me, so what exactly do you want me to keep confidential?”The commentator said he had told the officers he intended only to explain legal matters at the press conference and would not disclose any sensitive information that should concern them.

Li said he had reiterated that the “entire meeting”, including the fact that it had taken place, should be kept private.

He added that he had not expected to have to tell Wong what he could and could not say to his viewers.

The trial will continue on Monday, when the court will hear evidence about the allegedly seditious content published on Wong’s channel.
