Anadolu’s documentary Salda: A Bridge to the Red Planet was screened on Friday on the public day of the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Antalya.

The 72-minute film, produced by AA Productions, looks at Lake Salda in the southwestern Burdur province and its geological similarities to Mars, as well as the need to protect the lake.

It features scientists, biologists, earth scientists, divers and experts from Türkiye and NASA, from the US.

Salda has attracted scientific interest because its magnesium carbonate formations resemble those found in Mars’ Jezero Crater, an ancient lake basin where NASA’s Perseverance rover is investigating the planet’s geological history and searching for evidence of past microbial life. Studying similar formations on Earth can help scientists interpret geological evidence collected on Mars.

An IAC attendee from South Africa told Anadolu the documentary gave an insight into potential life on another planet. “Hopefully it will happen in our lifetime. But if not, at least one has an idea that there is potential for life on another planet after Earth,” the person said.

A visitor from the Netherlands, who was hearing about Lake Salda for the first time, said the film had “many nice shots.”“Now I really want to go there,” he said.

The attendee’s Turkish companion, who visited the lake 10 years ago, recalled how the lake had attracted public attention that time, both as a tourism destination and because of its scientific significance.

Reflecting on the documentary’s broader themes, he said the film brought together “nature, future of humankind, or past, and space.”The congress, for which Anadolu is the global communications partner, ends Friday at the NEST Congress Center.
