US President Donald Trump’s immigration and border policies make Canadians uneasy about traveling to the US for the first time, a concern reflected in tourism figures, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

Trudeau, speaking at the opening session on Friday of the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 26th Global Summit held in the Maltese capital of Valletta, stated that for the first time, many Canadians are “worried” about crossing the border.

“In the past number of years, the US hasn’t been very good at making travelers feel welcome, whether it’s the thickening of the borders, the worries about what can happen if you get arrested at the border,” he said. “Because, for decades, generations, Canadians and Americans criss-crossing our shared border, the longest unmilitarized border in the world, has been something we almost took for granted, and the family, personal, and business connections have been huge and strong.”

Trudeau stated that the real issue is Washington’s attitude towards Canada, particularly “this disrespect that the president has shown, in terms of saying it’s not a real country.”

“I think, first of all, (it’s important to) understand that some governments get along, some governments don't get along, and that's the reality,” he said. “Looking at what, how people are feeling — like, even when we were facing difficulties with the United States, we didn't impose penalties or raise prices or make it more difficult for people to travel to the United States, for example.”The former prime minister noted that the number of Canadians traveling to the US declined by more than 20% and that, to compensate, American tour operators, airlines, and hotels lowered their prices, but to no avail in changing Canadians' travel preferences.

“At places like Florida, Arizona, even nearby places like Maine or elsewhere, (they’re) coming to tell Canadians, ‘it’s okay, we still like you, Please come back’ — we know Canadians still like Americans, Americans still like Canadians, but conflict between governments and disrespect from the US government has caused Canadians to say, ‘Okay, let's look at other places to go,’ and that has been a really important shift, but also a telling one, that how the mood of a country, how people are made to feel welcome, is an extremely important part of tourism,” he said.

He recalled that early bookings for the North American World Cup were affected because travelers felt hesitant about entering the US.

“Now, the US actually was very successful in welcoming lots of people from around the world who had a wonderful experience discovering North America, discovering how wonderful and nice Americans are. But at the same time, in the run-up to the World Cup, we saw that bookings were down, we saw people worried about going to the United States, not sure if they wanted to go to the United States, and there was a point at which people were worrying that it might not be a huge success. It ended up being a success, but countries need to be a little more consistent. If they want tourism dollars, they have to show themselves as being open to the world, which is something that Canada always did well,” he added.
