TOKYO -- Japan's Kobe Steel is considering mergers and acquisitions overseas, including in India, to increase production of gas compressors as it grapples with high manufacturing costs due to such factors as the weak yen.
The steel and machinery manufacturer sells gas compressors mainly to energy companies to capitalize on growing demand related to hydrogen and ammonia.
"We want to ramp up production overseas, mainly for gas compressors, an area where we have a competitive advantage," Kazuhiko Kimoto, a Kobe Steel executive officer and director in charge of finance, told Nikkei.
The company is looking into acquisitions involving companies in India, a market it considers promising. In addition to having many talented engineers, the country is close to regions like the Middle East and Europe, where Kobe Steel's gas compressor customers are concentrated.
Manufacturing costs are rising at the company's main domestic production base for compressors, partly because of the impact of Japan's depreciating currency.
The company is aiming for global growth in its machinery business, which does not depend on the shrinking market in Japan. The segment, which includes compressors, is highly capital efficient. Kobe Steel expects a 12% return on invested capital in the fiscal year ending March 2027 for its machinery business, compared with 4% for its materials segment.
The company expects a pretax loss for its steel business of 2.5 billion yen ($15.8 million) in the April-September period, compared with a pretax profit of 8.5 billion yen in the year-earlier period. Efforts to improve earnings have not kept up with rising costs of transportation and key materials like coking coal.
"It takes around six months to reflect raw material cost increases in sales prices," Kimoto said. "This creates big losses." Since the start of this year, Kobe Steel has announced price hikes of more than 20,000 yen per metric ton for all of its steel products. The company aims to generate 14 billion yen in pretax profit from its steel business in the fiscal year ending March 2027, nearly quadrupling on the year.
