KYIV -- At 9:30 a.m., an explosion thundered through the city. Black smoke rose into the sky.
A drone had slammed into an office building housing an IT company. Three people, including passersby, had been killed and many others wounded.
"It could be me tomorrow," said Serhii, a third-year university student studying IT engineering, as he stood stunned, staring up at the building. He lives in a nearby university dormitory.
"I felt a powerful tremor at home and was terrified," he said. "The attacks happen every day, and I have no idea what lies ahead." In Kyiv, such attacks are a part of everyday life. Waves of missiles and jet-powered high-speed drones strike day and night, hitting not only apartment buildings, schools and hospitals, but also infrastructure underpinning the city's power, communications and logistics networks. A shortage of U.S.-made interceptor missiles is further pressuring Ukraine's air defense.
With Russian forces failing to make significant gains on the eastern front and Ukrainian troops regaining ground in some areas, Moscow appears to be stepping up attacks aimed at destroying the foundations of civilian life. In Kyiv, air-raid sirens sound dozens of times a day, and explosions frequently echo across the city.
A National Academy of Sciences building in central Kyiv is seen burning after an attack on Sept. 28.
On the day an attack in late September struck a building belonging to the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv, black smoke again covered the city center. Two people were killed. Firefighters were battling the flames when Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko arrived at the scene. He stood silently in front of the burning building and did not respond to questions from reporters.
After a while, another explosion was heard. This time, black smoke rose south of the academy. A drone had slammed into a hospital, scattering shards of broken glass across nearby streets. Firefighters and rescue workers rushed to the scene. At a nearby cafe, products had fallen from the shelves as an employee stood trembling.
Three days later, a drone struck School No. 12 in western Kyiv. Walls on the second through fourth floors were blown away, leaving the stairwell exposed. All 104 children were safe, as they had been in an underground shelter for their lessons.
The building of School No. 12 in Kyiv was heavily damaged in an Oct. 1 attack, with part of the walls blown away from the second to fourth floors, leaving the stairwell exposed.
Valentyna Chorna, the school's director, said it was fortunate that the shelter was sturdy enough and that the children remained calm. Some mothers arrived in panic and burst into tears, she said, prompting teachers to call parents one by one to reassure them.
Despite the attack, the school has continued to hold classes. Teachers constantly monitor air-raid alerts and information on drone movements, moving the children into the shelter when danger approaches. The underground facility has a generator and heating equipment.
"More than anything, the children want to come to school," Chorna said. "It is our responsibility to protect their daily lives." At night, dozens of residents lay on mats and other bedding on the floor inside a metro station on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. Some families have pitched tents and many could be seen putting their young children to sleep.
A woman named Iryna in her 20s who lives alone has been sleeping here for the past three months. She arrives at the station after 10 p.m., wakes up before 6 a.m., returns home to shower, then heads to work. "I'm too afraid of the missiles to sleep at home," she said, looking exhausted. "I may be reaching my limit." People shelter inside a metro station in eastern Kyiv on Sept. 30.
The metro line connecting the station with central Kyiv was temporarily suspended. The Pivdennyi (Southern) Bridge, which connects the eastern and western banks of the Dnipro, has come under repeated drone attacks, prompting authorities to restrict vehicle traffic and disrupt the metro service. The Ukrainian government has said it plans to secure an alternative route using pontoon bridges.
As winter approaches, the city's residents are discussing stockpiling food and water and temporarily relocating to other parts of the country. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, it has repeatedly attacked Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the cold months. Fears are growing that this winter could bring even harsher living conditions.
Damage to power plants threatens electricity, heating and water supplies. Planned power cuts have already begun in some areas, water outages are becoming more frequent, and Kyiv's metro at times has been shut down entirely. Since July, Russia has also repeatedly targeted food and pharmaceutical warehouses and data centers, further disrupting civilian life.
Hanna, a mother of two in eastern Kyiv, said she has no plans to evacuate. After making it through four such winters, she is prepared for power outages and heating failures. For now, she is stocking up on pet food, which she expects will become scarce.
Soldiers prepare to intercept drones in western Kyiv on Aug. 30. "After facing so many trials, we've become superhuman," she said.
Asked the aim of the attacks on Ukrainian cities, a source close to the Russian government told Nikkei Asia: "There is no need for a large-scale mobilization [which could carry political risks]. If we paralyze the cities, people will submit. The front line will eventually be unable to hold." Russia has stepped up attacks not only on Kyiv but also on other major Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv in the east and Odesa in the south.
A Ukrainian security official, meanwhile, said, "The resilience of the people is our source of strength." Eiji Furukawa is a contributing writer.
